Software EngineeringBiosecurity

Hello. I’m Nick. I’m a Canadian living and working in Ghent, Belgium.

I have over 8 years of experience building data and AI systems. I currently work at RAND doing AI and biosecurity research. Previously I was developing clinical AI tools for hospitals and physicians at Cavell, and AI-driven early warning systems for infectious diseases and pandemics at BlueDot. I started my career with the Geological Survey of Canada developing a web app for simulating damage from natural disasters.

One thread of my career has been protecting people from big shocks. I believe rapid AI development could be the greatest shock ever for humanity—especially if we fail to manage risks like loss of control, concentration of power, and engineered pandemics. If you’re interested in these topics or anything related, I’d love to hear from you at nick@nickgibb.com.

What I’ve worked on

RAND

to present

Senior AI Engineer, independent contractor

Cavell

to

Senior AI Engineer

I developed an AI pipeline that converted hundreds of thousands of unstructured medical documents into a standardized, structured format. I also built a chatbot over the data. Doctors could then look up patient information, such as clinical trial eligibility, and administrators could expedite billing.

ML6

to

Senior Data/AI Engineer

I developed internal and customer-facing AI services at Luminus, one of the largest energy providers in Belgium.

BlueDot

to

Staff Data/AI Engineer

I engineered a pipeline that ingested 500k multilingual news articles per day. The pipeline used embeddings and generative models to filter and annotate them for relevance to infectious-disease early-warning and biosecurity feeds.

I also built a chatbot for customers to interact with data from 40+ APIs using natural language. This work was featured on Cohere’s website.

Health Canada

to

Cloud/Data Engineer

I assisted with Canada’s pandemic response by building data pipelines for COVID-19 case and death data. I also worked with epidemiologists on COVID-19 case modeling, which supported policy decisions.

Geological Survey of Canada

to

Full Stack Developer

I built a geospatial web application for simulating earthquake and flood damage. Our team was honored with Natural Resources Canada’s Best of 2018 and Sector Merit Award for Excellence in Science.

Education

I hold a B.Sc. in Earth Sciences from McGill University and an M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan. I have some publications from my academic days (Google Scholar).

I completed the BlueDot Impact AI Alignment course.
